"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" Surpasses $100 Million In Japan, Making It Universal's Most Successful Title Ever Released
The movie has become the highest-earning picture to open in Japan in 2023 thus far, surpassing Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine, the 26th installment in the Detective Conan franchise, with over US$100 million (about 13.74 billion yen) earned there. Despite having larger total box office receipts overall, other anime films like Suzume and The First Slam Dunk did not debut in 2023. With 13.37 billion yen, or around US$94.0 million, Super Mario Bros. Movie has surpassed Disney's Frozen 2 to become Japan's second-highest-grossing foreign animated film. The Super Mario Bros. Movie came in second place with box office receipts of 25.5 billion yen, or around $179.2 million, less than the first Frozen movie.
When the Super Mario Bros. Movie debuted in Japan on April 28, it brought in 1.843 billion yen, or around US$13.54 million, in its first three days of sales, selling 1.276 million tickets.
The movie is currently the highest-grossing picture globally for 2023. Additionally, the movie is the highest-earning video game adaptation ever made.
